You begin the story as the descendant of the original Vault Dweller, living in a small village known as Arroyo, which is suffering from one of the worst droughts in history. The village elder calls you "The Chosen One" and asks you to go on a journey, to find the G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit) Which apparently has the power to create life and prosperity out of nowhere. The player, taking up the role of The Chosen One, is given only a Pip-Boy 2000, and an old Vault jumpsuit. You find Vault 13, the reported location of the G.E.C.K., however, the vault is empty, with no signs of life anywhere. You return to your village, to find it empty. It is revealed that the Enclave, the remnants of the United States Government, have captured them, and the residents of Vault 13 as well. It turns out that they were being held on the Enclave's Oil Rig base, and they were captured to be used as test subjects for the Forced Evolutionary Virus (F.E.V.). The Enclave plan, was to use the virus to kill any one with genetic impurities (radiation poisoning, mutations, etc.) However, the player manages to free the villagers and the vault dwellers, and blow up the Oil Rig, killing The President Richardson, and neutralize the Enclave threat. Then, it ends with the villagers and vault dwellers creating a prosperous community with the G.E.C.K.
